HAA 0030 Introduction to Modern Art

This course addresses critical issues in the history of painting, sculpture, photography, and architecture from the mid-19th century to the late 20th century. The first weeks will be devoted to discussion of the history and cultural practices of artistic Modernism with special attention to the work of the Impressionists, the Surrealists, and the Abstract Expressionists among others. The second part of the course will explore the significance of feminist and multicultural challenges to the Modernist tradition and the role of those challenges in the profound redefinition of Western culture unfolding in our society today.
