HAA 0102 Pro-Seminar for Art History Majors

(offered every fall semester)

What do I do with a major in art history? This 1-credit pro-seminar course was designed to help you answer this question and succeed, both academically in the department and outside the classroom, as you prepare for life beyond college. This course is required for all HAA majors who declared the major after April 2012, but it is highly recommended for all majors! In addition to providing workshops that will help you develop stronger research skills, the course will devote several weeks to developmental concerns. Visitors from the local community will come in to meet with students to discuss diverse career options in museums, galleries, arts organizations and academia. Other workshops include: how to develop a strong resume as an undergraduate student; internships; academic opportunities–what they are, why they’re important, and how to secure them; developing and writing ‘the essay’ (cover letters, statements of purpose, and letters of intent); developing an independent research project and writing the proposal; giving public presentations. A practical, life-skills course! The class meets once a week, for a 50-minute session. Students will be graded on the S/N basis through the completion of brief–useful and practical-homework assignments.
