HAA 1230 Pagans and Christians: Early Middle Ages

This course explores art and architecture in Europe and the Mediterranean during the period 200-800 CE, with a focus on the slow decline of the Roman Empire, the rise of Byzantium, and the formation of new societies in Western Europe. The rapid Christianization of the Roman Empire will be a major theme, together with the enduring presence of pagan traditions. Special attention will be paid to the development of manuscript illumination in the British Isles, and particular emphasis will also be placed on the cultural achievements associated with the empires established by Constantine, Justinian, and Charlemagne.
