Opportunities

Numerous opportunities are available to HAA majors

  • Internships at local arts organizations, including but not limited to:
    • The Carnegie Museum of Art
    • The Andy Warhol Museum
    • The Mattress Factory
    • Society for Contemporary Craft
    • Pittsburgh Center for the Arts
    • Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation
    • Young Preservationists Association
  • Nationally competitive internship programs, such as those at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, the Smithsonian Institutions, and others
  • The Fine Foundation fellowships for professional development, offered exclusively to University of Pittsburgh History of Art and Architecture majors
  • Independent Research, developing a project under the guidance of a faculty member
  • Research assistantships
  • Teaching assistantships
  • Grants and Fellowships
  • Writing competitions
  • Research Presentation Venues – including the department’s own annual undergraduate showcase, “HAAARCH!!!,” and national symposia and conferences
  • Research Publication

Each major is strongly advised to familiarize themselves with these by consulting the Opportunities handout often and by consulting the departmental advising courseweb site (on courseweb.pitt.edu, go to “organizations” and then click on “ARTSC DEPT ADVISING ORG HAA”). All current opportunities and detailed information about those listed above are provided here. New majors should contact the main office (room 104, 412-648-2400) to make sure they are provided with access to this site.

Students should also meet individually with Gretchen Bender, the director of undergraduate advising, regularly to discuss how best to take advantage of their time here and pursue as many of these opportunities as possible. To set up an appointment click here.
