"Information Visualization and Visual Studies: An Exploration"

Alison Langmead, Director of the Visual Media Workshop

Constellation: Visual Knowledge

What is the field of information visualization and what does it have to do with art history, architectural history, studio arts and/or visual studies? This colloquium will introduce the information sciences discipline of information visualization and will bring it into conversation with fields of critical analysis, such as art history. Is artistic production a form of information visualization? Is the practice of information visualization a form of artistic production? What might a critical visual studies approach bring to the practice of creating information visualizations and vice versa? This colloquium is designed to provoke more questions than answers and to begin a conversation about the relationship between the liberal arts and the information sciences in this domain.
