Awards and Fellowships

The History of Art and Architecture Department offers several awards each academic year. All award winners are celebrated at the end of April or early May each year at the department's annual graduation reception and award ceremony.

• The Friends of the Frick Fine Arts Writing Award is decided at the end of each fall semester, with a monetary prize. Any research paper produced in an HAA class is eligible, if nominated by the faculty member who supervised the course or independent study. The winner of this prize is recognized each February at the University's Honors Convocation.
• The Fil Hearn Award for study abroad is given to an architectural studies major each year to help defray the expenses of participating in an program abroad that will contribute significantly to the student's academic goals. Applications for the Fil Hearn Award are due in the middle of the spring semester each year.

• The HAA department, through generous support from The Fine Foundation, is able to provide three museum professions fellowships each academic year to qualified HAA majors. Each Milton Fine Museum Profession Fellowship recipient is supported with a stipend of $3500 which enables him or her to devote full attention to an intensive internship, working directly with a local arts professional who serves as a mentor. Fellowships usually take place each summer, but on occasion, a student may hold this position over the course of an academic year. Each year, the call for applications is announced early in the spring semester for the upcoming summer/academic year. In the past, fellows have worked for the curators of the Department of Contemporary Art at the Carnegie Museum of Art, at the archives of the Andy Warhol Museum, at the office of the curator and acting director of the Andy Warhol Museum, and for the director of the Society for Contemporary Craft.

• At the close of each spring semester, the department reviews the qualifications of all students, HAA and Architectural Studies majors, who have completed or are completing an honors thesis and are expected to graduate with honors from the department. Each year, the faculty selects the student or students who demonstrate exemplary academic achievement and future promise as scholars in the discipline to receive the John Haskins award and/or a Faculty Commendation Award. A small monetary prize accompanies each of these awards. Students who are eligible to be considered for this award will be contacted by the department early in the spring semester.
