Graduate Student

Colleen O’Reilly is a PhD candidate in History of Art and Architecture at the University of Pittsburgh.  Her research is in the history of photography and in the history of the use of images in education, especially science education directed at youth and the general public in the U.S. during the Cold War era.  She is interested in intersections between art and science in photography and in representation more broadly. Her dissertation will bring together the scientific photography of Berenice Abbott, the science exhibits of Will Burtin, and an American mid-century discourse on “visual literacy.”
